Ok its got to the point where im happy with the vw engine. It seems to fit the 901 box ok. The engine came without carbs so i am wondering if the original solex carbs would be suitable. has anyone recently had their carbs overhauled? how much, where, what to look out for etc? Transend said they can exchange for roughly £400 but i want to keep the original carbs if they are not porous. Im in the uk by the way! Cheers.

SOME ONE SAID THE SOLEXS CABS ARE VERY GOOD THOUGH, DO YOU RATE WEBBERS FROM EXPERIENCE?

Solex's generally are 30 plus year old carbs. They can be rebuilt, I've run both, I like the idea of having something as important as a carb new and reliable. Solex's are somewhat expensive to rebuild if you do it correctly / butterfly shafts re-bushed etc.

Yea but i figure its £400 quid on a re-build but then i can keep them for the original engine. Otherwise its £400+ for webbers +£400 rebuild later on. What i realy need to do is get the old 356 engine up and running.

These little cars are not inexpensive to operate and maintain, you ask for opinions I was the only taker, perhaps others will chime in. You could contact http://www.bbs912.org/cgi-bin/bay912.pl I know some of them still use Solex, perhaps they'll have more of what you want to hear.
Good Luck, Chas. 69/912

Rothko I use Andy Prills guy for the carbs £135+vat each they came back looking like NEW although I have had some leaks from him not tightening up the jets etc...
Carb.... I can't believe I am giving away my very hard earned resurch Carbureta Exchange .... Grab a copy of Pratical Motoring look up the list of advertisers in the back he will be in there. M Solexs are great the best carb for the job but when they are 30+ years old and all they get is new gaskets they don't work they get slated, they need a Full and proper rebuild ,crack tested porus testing, new bushes etc etc then they will last another 20+ years. Webbers are great they just chuck in the fuel and make a bad car run well ,sorry fact. They were not right for the car and webbers if you look are not left and right carbs just right ones ( I think might be the other way any way ...) I have learnt alot on all this. There is the proper way for the that will do way. It's up to you. Oh just noticed you want to put them on a bug engine well they should still be fine . and then you will have a apair of Solexs ready and going and know to you to work .. www.classic912.co.uk

912 UK,
I'm sorry but I must take issue with most of your remarks, the point of postng information here, presumably accurate information is to share from our hard earned research, not to hoard or parcial it out like the garages do. Next, the idea that a carb can make a bad car run good is ludicrous. Finally, one can buy a add on for a Weber set that makes a left hand carb a right hand, I've done it, it's easy and works well. The add on keeps the butterfly shafts from twisting from uneven strain over years of use. I too have a bit of time invested in this carburetion business and it work well for me. Cheers, Chas. 69/912

C.Clark .. Hi I like your comments. yes I was not awear that you can now get the adapter for the webers to make them left and right. I am sure it is easy to fit. I still Stand by my comments about making a car run well. (Fuel wise)
It is interesting the split between weber owners and solex owners in the 912 world. So you can see I am a solex man. But that's what this site is all about putting forward all the info we have gained with these cars. Great M ![]() |

At heart I am also a Solex man- I have a Bristol 401 with them on. I have never used twin Weber carbs. Thank you all for you information but please dont kill eachother on my behalf! So I will check out Andy prill-this is much cheaper than I thought, is this a full re-build?? And i Think to speed things along new webbers on the V.W. But I insist on the solex when the original engine goes back in. Thanks all.
