off to solvang, need help in Iowa

hey we're on our way to solvang, and im having some engine probs. valves have a tick tick tick sound (started making that sound after they were adjusted before we started out).

also the car as an irregular backfire at idle, and disapears when getting the car to speed. it sounds bad. its always been a loud engine though. the odd thing is, it runs fine, especially at speed.

would someone in the area of western illinois or eastern iowa be able to help us out and either set it right or check it out to see if we can make the rest of the trip.
