Question 912 throttle pull

Can anyone tell me how long the throttle cable pull should be on my '66 912? ie the distance the cable end should travel between idle and wide open throttle?

Thanks

James

eh.... maybe 1.5 to 2 inches???? basically,as long as you can see the butterflys on the carbs go from relaxed/closed to full open by pressing the throttle, all is well.... why do you ask????

A friend is making manifolds and linkages for me for my recently-acquired Dell'Ortos, and he's asked me for this measurement.

I measured it at 22mm, which I thought might be a bit short, hence the question.

Cheers

Thanks, Morrie.

I guess the measurement should be independent of the type of carbs / linkage used - I'm looking for how much 'shorter' the cable is at full throttle than at idle.

(I know it's not really shorter, I'm just not that good at describing these things!)

Cheers

James

Not to be a pain, but you realize that this is a mechanical linkage. There are no cables.......I understand your question is probably related to how long to make the throttle arms toattach the drop links to, correct?

Sorry, should have mentioned this before - my car has a cable, thanks to the creativity of a previous owner ... another thing to put right, eventually, but it works for now.

When I got the car the cable was rubbing on one of the Nadella joints, and had gone more than half way through the side of the UJ.

can't you measure it on your car? Also, the travel should be equal to the gas pedal throw, shouldn't it?

Yep, measured on my car as being 22mm. A stock VW is 35mm, which was why I thought the improvised cable arrangement might not have enough travel in it.

Cheers

Hmmm....is there no adjustment point? I would think you would be able to adjust for correct throw once you have the new carbs on...maybe I'm missing something here?

Throttle cable length

I converted my mechanical linkage to cable when I did my Type 4 conversion. I used Weber 40 IDF's with the hex-bar linkage kit. On this setup, you control the overall movement through the range by moving the adjusters closer to the hex bar for a shorter throw, further out for a longer throw. I don't know how this will be on the Dell's. One other thing, under the gas pedal, there is an adjustable stop. Turn it all the way down, giving the gas pedal max travel. Once you have your carbs on and adjusted for idle and the cable is connected, have some press the gas pedal slowly while you watch for full throttle (vertical butterflies in the carbs, do this with the car turned OFF). You should be able to get full throttle. Then turn the "stop" under the pedal back up to this point so you don't stretch the cable or bend any throttle linkage at the carbs.

On your setup, is the cable run full length to the gas pedal? I am running the stock mechanical linkage all the way to the trans and then convert to cable from there.
