about to buy '66 912.. help!

Hi - I'm about to pull the trigger on this car I've always wanted.

Can anyone tell me some of the things I might look for or inquire about that cause trouble on these cars? Also, how about a price range for a running '66 912 that's been somewhat restored & in decent condition.

Any info greatly appreciated!

thanks,

Jeff

Has the engine been rebuilt? when? get compression and leak down numbers.

Is it repainted? If so, do a real good search for body work. If not, plan to spend 5K for a nice paintjob.

look hard at the gas tank and the sheetmetal in front of it. Front pans rust out on these things.

Look at the tortion bar area for rust too ($$$$)

Look at the floorboards for rust.

these things rust!

Do searches on this board for lots more tips on buying.... this will get you started.

Morrie is correct...RUST RUST RUST, these cars are notorious for rusting out, get the car off the ground and go through it well, rust work is not cheap, I have over $6000.00 in the undercarriage rust repair in my 68 912, I look at it this way, I have a hand built Porsche now Good luck with your car!
