rubber mats
Can anyone say authoritatively say how many rubber mats originally came in 912s? I have five in mine, and I would like to know if there are in fact six. The mats I have are: two front floor mats; two rear floor mats; and a mat covering the forward part of the tunnel. My tunnel mat ends just aft of the e-brake- the same place where aft piece of tunnel carpet begins. Is there a sixth rubber mat for the aft part of the tunnel?
Thanks. -E. |

In my 69 I have carpet on the tunnel where you describe mat #5. Fortunately or unfortunately this is the original 34 year old carpet too. Craign |

Rubber mats are pre-69 / full carpeting started in '69.
I'll take a look at a '68 if needed. |

Both of my 68's (one coupe, one targa) came with the rubber mats just as you have described. Jerome

I've got a '66 with the aforementioned 5 mats and a rubber boot covering the e-brake.

FWIW - My 69 912 came with 5 rubber mats. Mats are listed on the original order form (European delivery). Scott 69 912 & 76 912E

Interesting Scott
According to Brett Johnson's "Guide To Authenticity" ...rubber floor mats are listed for SWB cars...by 1969 there were no more rubber mats. Is your car an early '69? Perhaps a special order? I've never seen a '69 with rubber mats. |

It's #(2)3078 (of 3450), Karmann Built, so it's one of the last. I have both the stateside order form and the European order/delivery forms & 5 inches of records so it's pretty well documented. It doesn't say rubber mats, so I supposed it's open to debate, and since I'm the same age as the car, I wasn't there. A former owner may have bought them.
Brett Johnson also got the VIN numbers for Karmann vs. Porsche built 1969's switched (2 vs. 0) so there is some possibility that his documentation/evidentiary support may not be complete. If I learned anything following the 356 Registry it's that cars often came with custom paint, special order this or that, particularly when they were European delivery. My guess is the first owner asked for them, or a previous owner added them. Regardless they are handy. That's quite a list of 69's. Scott, 69 & 76 912/E |
