Has anyone found a good coffee cup holder that can be mounted on the door panel or better yet a center console that actually fits our cars and has cup holders.
Thanks, Ron D

No problem Ron, he's still trying to decide what kind of wood to use(I'm holding out for cherry or walnut), soon as he has the layouts done I'll send them along.

Kevin:
I was thinking of doing the same thing, making my own. I was planning on using 1/8" thick luan (plywood) then covering it with a Perlon type fabric if I can find any. If not, then some matching vinyl pattern. Just glued on over the wood. Any exposed wood would be painted black. There are vinyl fabrics with a foam or felt backing that would make it look very presentable. I have made a few sketches but havn't found the right design yet. Thanks, Ron D

Yeah that would look nice. I'm going to go for finished wood, I believe he's going to use some thin plywood from a local woodshop and then veneer the thing with whatever I decide I like...the basic frame would work either way veneer or covered. As soon as I have something from him I'll let you know.

It would be cool if we could all collaborate and come up with a design which would be appealing and somewhat standard. I could post plans on the Texas 912 Website. I like the black vynal covered idea.... Still trying to figure out how to smoothly work around the shift lever, heat control, and e-brake... any thoughts?

Yeah thats the main problem area...I've got to get Tracy some more measurements for shifter throw and such...I'll let you know...I'm trying to convince him to ride down to Houston with me next month...

I'm thinking it would replace the piece of carpet that goes from behind the e-brake to the firewall.....It could ride the tunnel and clamp into the linkage adjust access portal... hmmmm. Ok, now I am going to go home and draw up a sketch..... I'll post a concept and we can talk around it... sound like fun? I may even be persuaded to produce a number of them at a really low price for those of us interested. Stay tuned!

Here is my rough sketch of a console that would fit over the shift lever boot and over the tunnel hump in the dead space under the ash tray.
Disregard the company logo water mark on the sketch pad paper. Thanks, Ron D ![]()

Ron,
You never cease to amaze me in the time, effort and thought you put in to making your 912 a more better ride. The really cool part is you have no hesitation to share either, that is the best. The only question I have on your design is the cup holder part, is that location a bit close if someone were to move a seat forward? Craign |

Craig:
Thanks for the comments. The cup holders could be moveable to accomodate seat movement, I envision that they clip on and over the edge of the console frame. Most of my passengers want the seat as far back as mine which leaves a lot of room. The cup holder location is kind of under the leg but easily reached by driver or passenger. see, Morrie is right, we are getting it refined to the point of perfection. Anyone else have suggestions or comments??? I am willing to make a prototype and patterns if the sides and partitions are flat and easily cut out of luan. Ron D

Ron,
Only problem with clip on is, clip off when making a high speed curve or turn. Maybe a velcro anchor.........my wife hits me upside the head enough I don't need a drink container doing that. ![]() Craign |

OK you (or your wife) convinced me! Forget the clips we will use a more secure fastener. Maybe a slot with a wing nut(s).
Velcro is NOT a consideration, I hate it, it sticks to everything but what you want it to. Could restrict passengers to ong legged ones only?? Thanks, Ron

Morrie:
If you just move up the cup holders to the level of the ash-tray you will loose knee room and your knee would hit it. Also, the driver will have to reach under or around the steering wheel to get at the cup holder, don't you think? Not sure there is room between the gear shift lever in 2nd & 4th and an open ash tray for two cups, need to measure the space. When I sit in the drivers seat my right hand falls onto the hand brake/heater levers area which is why I chose these cup locations. Once I get a cardboard mock-up I'll play around with cup holder locations. Keep up the dialog. thanks, Ron D
