Aftermarket Steering Wheels

Looking for comments and feedback on size of aftermarket steering wheels. I am trying out a real small one now and can't see my speedo needle at all at highway speeds. I am looking for a fatter than original wheel that is comfortable, a little smaller, and looks good, wood or leather. Feedback is appreciated.

Thanks!
Morrie

yep, thats the one i am looking at Harry. Just wondering if I will be able to see my speedo still.....

My original wood wheel is really beautiful but i just don't enjoy how it feels so I am getting rid of it.

Morrie, i hear what you mean. i love my orig wood wheel too, but the grip on it is so thin, that it gets uncomfortable after a while.

My car came with a Nardi three-spoke wheel which I like vary much. It's got a nice, chunky feel to it, and doesn't obscure the speedo - well, not much anyway.

I'm not sure if it's completely 'period correct' or not, but I do know it's been on the car for at least 20 years.

There's a picture of it in the thread on 5-gauge dashboards - I'm going to get it recovered at some stage, as the leather has seen better days.

Cheers

James

Wheel Skin

Morrie:
Have you ever thought of covering your steering wheel with leather?? I installed a "Wheel Skin", it's top grade leather in black. What a difference, thicker & easier to hold on too and looks great. I think it was only $30.

Nardi or Momo are good quality, great steering wheels.

Personally, I'll make do with the old wooden wheel that came stock on my 912. I've heard folks murmer "ooh, if you have an accident, it'll splinter in your face..." and tripe like that.

If I have an accident in my 912, chances are the entire thing (and me too) will be wadded but good. The steering wheel in the face would be the least of my worries.

It's part of the attraction of driving a 912 hard. Hunter Thompson called it The Edge.

Hi Ron,

Do you happen to know the specifics on the cover you installed? Sounds like a reasonable way to go to me...

Morrie:
I bought it from Performance Products. If you have their catalog 52A it's on page 66.

Wheelskins:
For my 69 it's PN 9144, black at $33.95 each.

For 1960-1968 911/912 it's PN 9143 same price.

They say 1960-68 are 16.5 to 18" OD and 1969-73 are 14.5 to 16" OD.

I know i had to stretch mine a bit but it was easy. I took off the steering wheel and placed it on a rod held in my bench vise so I could rotate it and pull the cord nice & tight. Took about 1 hour.

It's even a better feel if you wear leather driving gloves when driving.

Thanks,
Ron D

hey Morr - you wouldn't consider putting a skin over your wood wheel, would you? I'd be glad to trade you for my plastic one - I hear the cover fits better on the plastic ones anyways Just a pal trying to help!!

I like my Dino wheel they are pricey, I have a little trouble getting a Porche crest horn button...Porsche put the kibosh on marketing their image a few years ago, ebay had one for me, cost 3 times what it should of.

I am leaning towards a modified 914 wheel right now. If you can't find what you want, make it!

Anybody interested in buying a wood wheel in good condition? E-bay sells them for around 300...... 'course trading for other parts is always cool too!
