While reading my 69 Owners Manual for the 100th time I noticed the normal Oil Consumption statement which really suprised me. Had no idea this amount of oil consumption was considered normal.
I scanned the page for you to see for yourself. Fortunately my car does not come close to this oil volume even after 84K miles. Thanks, Ron D ![]()

Neither of my 912's (both 68's) have ever consumed anything even close to that amount and I used to put some pretty good weekend mileage on them running from Savannah up to the mountains in N GA and NC (600 to 700 miles roundtrip might be 1/2 quart used and that was usually running them as hard as I could when I could).

I find that if I'm driving on the highway, I can go all day without hardly burning anything, but with stop-and-go traffic here in Houston, I can easily burn a 1/4 quart or more in a 100 miles...
I seem to remember reading somewhere (could be in my up-fixin der porsche) where Porsche would only consider 912 on warranty work if it consumed 100 miles to the quart... YIKES!

I go through that amount in mine, but i attribute it to the condition of the motor.

Dang guys, mines still full on the stick at every oil change...maybe there's something wrong with mine! And thats with the leak I "used " to have on the sump plate....Morrie...heheheh

Yep, thanks Morrie! No more leaky sump plate, now if I'd get motivated and seal the dang generator stand where its seeping, my engine would probably stay pretty dang dry and clean. Of course then I'd have to redo all my sheet metal and make things look nice in there...and oil is a rust inhibitor isn't it?

Aircooled engines should always use a bit of oil, make sure your carbs are not dripping fuel down the intakes, I had an old VW, I had to drain a bit of oil now and then, it kept increasing on the stick because of a flooding carb.

Heh, yeah I've had that happen on small block chevy's when the seals in the fuel pump go bad, easy way to check for fuel in the oil is to put a lighter to the dipstick when you first pull it out. If it catches fire...you have fuel in the oil. I actually have a SB Chevy blow the valve covers off because of that once...it'll scare the heck out of ya.
