901 shift knob

I need a 901 tansmission shift knob for my 912. I have a 5 speed and want the OE knob that came with the vehicle. I purchased a wooden one off "ebay" with the appropriate gear pattern (Reverse - to the left and up & 1st to the left and down), but when it arrived I discovered it was threaded at the attachment point.

My questions are as follows:

For what years and model of Porsches does this wooden shift pertain?

Did the 901 transmission for the 912 come with different styles of shift knobs?

If I wanted the Black OE shift knob w/ the 5 speed pattern on top, what years and model would this be applicable to?

Is it the knob that is threaded or the shifter? Either way a big glob of epoxy will keep it in place.

Craign,
The epoxy method for attaching the knob will not work on the threaded knob because the shaft is larger in diameter than the knob threads. This is a good thing if I wanted to thread the shaft, but I would like to keep the car OE. I think there are plenty of spare shift knobs out there. I just have to do a little research to insure I get the right one next time. Thanks for your imput! This seems like a pretty easy question for you 912 aficionados. Are all the 901 shift knobs attached with an interference(friction fit) or are there some threaded versions? Thanks in advance for some throughput!

901 shift knob

The non-threaded shifters use a 'corrugated' sleeve that is a press fit between the knob and lever. I don't know what criteria Porsche used for who got which one (someone on this forum should know). My 67 has the threaded version.

Hey,

I've got a '66 with a threaded lever and an aftermarket knob the screws on. I'm sure Stoddard could get you a OEM knob but be prepared to give up and child (or the rights to one). But seriously, they may be around $100.

Thanks for the feedback. It looks like the earlier models came with the threaded shaft.

i have the same wooden shift knob, but its not threaded, and neither is my shifter (got it on ebay too.. and it said in the description, not threded which i made sure to look for!).

the oem shift knob, was black plastic, and DID NOT have the pattern on it. these are no longer made. the after market ones available do have the shift pattern on them.

shift pattern started in 68 with the crush washer and elimination of the threaded one. If oyu have threads, you can press on one of these newer ones. The ones without the shift pattern are not too expensive and are still available. The others can be had used, but prices go up rapidly as the condition improves. I got mine used for about 25 bucks and its slightly cracked and faded, but that matches my personality...

It's easy

65/66: Treaded, no pattern, mushroom shape
67: Threaded, pattern, round knob shape
68 and on: Push on type, pattern, round knob shape
