| porsche 912 + VW engine
I have in my garage a porsche 912 body and frame in decent shape. I also have the engine in various peices with many peices missing. It is not in good condition and I don't really know if the core is usuable. I also have a VW flat four from a 71 bus. This engine runs well and is in decent condition. Can I use any of the porsche parts to build up the VW to "porsche specs". Both engines are the 1600cc model. I'm looking to save money by using the porsche carbs, cams, valves, or dual heads if possible. Any help is much needed and appreciated. Thanks, John

I don't think there will be anything useful you can swap into your 912 engine from your bus motor, other than an 050 distributor if it has one? You may be able to re-use the clutch disk if it's in good shape, but why chance it? Although the engines are the same relative size, everything is different, from the crank, cam, P&C's, rods etc. You'll have to make a choice to go full VW or full porsche. There's nothing wrong with the bus engines - there are quite a few people who have big Type 4 VW engines in their 912's. They can be made to produce tons of HP and a lot more torque than the standard 912 engine. It all comes down to financials and originality.

The Type 4 is definitely a good decision, and will most likely come in at the same cost, if not cheaper than a stock rebuild on a 912 engine. It all depends on how crazy you go, and how much work you do yourself. Besides, Porsche used the Type 4s in 914s and 912Es so you are keeping it all "Porsche". They did help in the design, even if VW made most of them. Personally, the T4 is the best bang for your buck. My 2056 (130hp) is a serious screamer, and it's still running the stock crank and rods! A stroker will net even more power. Of course, you can go full-on and build a wild 2.6L+ all-aluminum one and make 200+ hp all day on pump gas if you want. I would never go back to the way my car used to be. No way. Later, G '69 912 with 2056ccs of stompin' T4 power!

Hehehe, just because I don't want to go back, doesn't mean if I ever sell it the next owner won't want to go back. Everything I do to the car is completely reversible. Mostly bolt-ons that can easily be removed and replaced with stock if so desired. The original engine is dead-stock, never been rebuilt, and has 75k miles on it. Runs great and is strong, but my quest for power showed me that it would cost too much to make it into a time-bomb, and that it was worth more for me just to put it aside for the time being and do the T4. Nope, haven't changed the gears yet since the car is tucked away for winter. I've got the new trans torn down, and am replacing synchros and getting it ready for spring. Once I get the car out, the old trans gets pulled, the new 914-based box goes in, and we are cruisin'. IF spring ever gets here. ARGH! Later, G

Engine IS together, and comes with a optional 5 speed and re-built Webasto gas heater. The engine/trans are in the car, everythings done but hooking up the little stuff.
