1976 912E Increasing wheel & tire size

Previous owner installed 185/70/14's on original Fuchs. The total diameter of the tire appears very small. The speedometer reads 53 mph when the car is doing a true 40 mph! A larger (diameter) tire should correct the speedo. How large and wide should I go? What maximum width tire will fit in my fenders? Thanks

Marc:
I think the original tire size was 185X14 (not the 70-series profile). The original combination looked a little antiquated (remember the 911E with 14" wheels?)I think the best combination is Fuchs 16inch by 6 in front and rear, or maybe 7's in the rear, but keep in mind that the rear flares are narrow, as compared to the SC's,etc. Also, any 6X15 Fuchs with 185/70's will work fine.
