76 912E Engine Rebuild

I have a 912E with a tired engine. I am considering rebuilding it with a larger displacement and Weber carbs. I have been told not to mess with the engine and stick with a stock rebuild and fuel injection because the car is rare, and changing things would decrease the value of the car. Any opinions on the trade off between re-sale value and performance would be appreciated. Mark Stephens offers a 2.6ltr engine with almost twice the horespower of the stock motor for about the cost of a stock rebuild.

JIMMCD:
I also have a (rock stock) 912E. In my opinion, I wouldn't modify the motor for the following reasons: 1. The motors run hot in stock form (ever see the oil cooler? Look real hard and you'll see that tiny thing). 2. I don't know where you live, but here in CALIF, you can't even proceed with the smog test if EVERYTHING (from gas cap to EGR to aircleaner, etc.) is absolutely stock. 3. I don't know how much true HP you'll gain - these motors seem to be rather stressed out in stock form (I don't know if the heads can take much more). My suggestion: for the amount of money you'll probably spend you can probably find an "upgraded" 2.7 liter 6cyl motor/gearbox from a wreck, or one that won't smog and you'll have yourself a 76 911S-with a stock "plastic wrapper" 912E motor on the
shelf!
Good luck!
Bill.
