Tires

Another question I have is regarding tires for my 1968 912. It currently has 185 70 HR 15 on it. I have not been able to find that size so far but a guy at the tire shop says he thinks maybe a 195 60 HR 15 would work also. Any tips on buying tires? A friend of mine recommends only Michelins. Have any of you used other less expensive brands. The guy at the tire shop is telling me that Toyo is a good brand in an H series tire. Any help would be appreciated..Thanks!

The tire you would probably want to go with is a 195-65-15. If you go up 10mm in the tread width (from 185 to 195), you only need to go down 5% in the aspect ratio (from 70 to 65). That way, your speedo and milage will still be accurate. If you go with the 195-60's, there will be like a 3% difference between your speedo's mph that it is showing and your actual speed (same with mileage). After trying fruitlessly to find 185-70-15's, I went with the 195-65's and I love them. The wider contact patch means a bit better handling and you really can't tell the difference in looks from the 185's (plus you can actually find them and the prices are ususally reasonable). As far as the brand goes I'm not really sure. I've got bridgestones and I've been happy with them. I've heard Michellins are very good, but have never tried them. Hope this helps.
