Engine Pull

I bought my first 912 about 4 months ago. I have been a VW guy for quite some time. I just got to ask what do you recommend when pulling the engine. All of the Clymer, Chilton, Factory, etc. manuals say you have to pull the transaxle with the engine. Maestro's book says you don't, who's right?

I have pulled my 1200 engine on my '64 bug a time or two with no problems.

If you do have to pull them both, do you lower them to the ground to pull them apart? Would some sort of platform make the separation easier?

If you leave the tranaxle in, what do you use to prop it up? Any problems mating the engine to the 'loose' transaxle upon installation?

What is everyones feelings on the 40mm Webber conversions on a stock motor? I have spent a small fortune trying to get my Solex carbs running right to no avail and think the Webbers might be the way to go. Any issues with linkage or anyting? Are they bolt on kits?

Jeff, it mostly depends on if just the engine needs work, or if you plan to work on the transaxle, also-if the transaxle is working fine, just drop the engine and don't mess with disconnecting the axles, shift rod, starter wiring, etc that you have to when removing the transaxle. The major difference between VW's and Porsche's in the mounting of the drivetrain is that VW's use a front mount near the nose of the transaxle, and a rear mount near the bellhousing-the engine is NOT mounted to the body (except in Type 3's and Buses.) Porsche uses a mount at the front of the transaxle and a rear engine mount to the body. I've owned a '65 Beetle (little hot rod), a '74, worked on my bro's '67 Ghia, and my current project is a '66 912 with a VW engine-it wa s a 1600, will be a 2110. I used a tie-down strap around the rear upper shock towers and under the bellhousing to support the 901 5-spd in my 912 when I dropped the engine-it's only about 90 lbs or so.

Use two jacks. One for the trans and one for the motor. First order of business is to get the car up as high as possible. It is really hard not to make a huge post on this one.
Anyway, you want the rear end up to clear the fan shroud once you pull free of the output shaft.
Be careful not to lower the the tranny too much. It is not too bad really. I use a chain from both shock towers and a bolt in one of the tranny holes to hold the tranny up. Good Luck, JMB..
P.S. Webers work fine, but Solexes is a superior unit once dialed in.
