Question what kind of gas for 912E needed?

Does anyone know what kind of gas 1976 912E require?

I'm guessing regular 87 octane as it is a VW motor.

I have run the 87 octane in mine and I get some pinging going up hill. With the 92 octane no pinging. I have only had the car since Feb. I am planning to tune it up with the 87 octane in the tank and see what happens.
