Attempted removal of the starter from my 912 today. I removed the lower bolt and the electrical connection to the solenoid, that was easy. Now how in the world am I going to remove the top bolt? I removed the header duct hose (and promptly threw it away) for better access, but no dice. Any help?

The top fixing is a long bolt which also bolts the engine to the gear box. You need to push the correct size allan key(I think 8mm) into the head of the bolt above the starter motor. Then with a 17mm spanner you can undo the nut on the other end of the bolt with out the bolt turning. You will find this nut via the engine bay behind the fan housing. A bit tricky but it gets easy with practace. Hope you understand these rather poor instructions. Good luck.

This is no fun unless you are a contortionist, which many Germans must have been... I laugh now because with my 914 type 4 in the 912, I can change the starter so easily! Oh, well, you'll get it!
