Question Mechanical fuel pump question

What exactly is it that causes a mechanical fuel pump to go bad? Will rebuild kits solve the problem?

Mostly the rubbery diaphragm "rots" and does not push/pull or leaks and lets the air in or fuel out (meaning into your crankcase oil). A quick rebuild using the Pelican Parts kit will get you back to pumping merrily along. Another possible thing is the metal pushrod may be incorrect length (adjusted by shims I think, if I remember right). Or the cam on the distributer dirve gear is worn too much. THis is less likely unless it has not been getting proper oil when running. Have you tried bypassing yoour ffuel filter if any and see if it pumps any fuel out will cranking the engine? Do this with the distributor to coil wire off to avoid fire.
