rough/no idle...again
 
well...after checking the timing, this thing still won't idle below about 1500 without backfiring through the carbs and eventually dying. recap: both carbs stripped and cleaned, new plugs, wires, cap/rotor, points..dwell is dead on, can't sync the carbs because I can't get it to idle at 900. The maestro seems to describe this condition to a "T" in his book...says it is the throttle shaft leaking by, and needs to be re-bushed. Has anyone done this? Is it pretty straigtforward? I have a lathe and mill, and would like to do the work myself if possible... I have turned out the idle mixture screws two turns, but haven't tried to "fine-tune" them yet..hard to do without a smooth idle. Idle jets were checked and are not blocked. .... any help is appreciated.. Drew

So you have Solexes??? If so the Maestro, as usual, is right. Your throttle shafts are worn and need to be fixed, no other solution. I can't help you here. If their not Solexes what distributor do you have? If you have an 009 you will never get it to idle properly. The fix, a new 050. Also check to see that all the butterflies are closing all the way. ..yeah, Josh, they are Solex carbs...I do have two other pairs of them that I need to go pick up...maybe a couple of them are ok. I wouldn't mind going over to the Webers, as the maestro (and most other lesser lights) seem to think that is a good move...but I just can't swing the money right now. Have you ever performed the re-bushing yourself, or known anyone that has? I'm ready to get this car running...I have a 16 yr old daughter that is already calling it "hers".. thanks for the information....Drew
