Hi,
I,m working on my first rebuild and it's time to reinstall the pistons and cylinders. I have a ring compressor and have the first piston installed in the cylinder and the rod is connected to the piston. I now have to push cylinder to the case, but the oil-ring has to be compressed to move the cylinder in. With the head studs installed in the case, I cannot use the ring compressor. How do you compress the oil ring so the cylinder can be put in place? Any advice is appreciated! Adam White 68 912 |

There are special ring compressors available for VW and Porsche flat 4 engines. You could a VW specialist. Alternativly you can use a large (Jubalee)hose clip and clamp it round each ring in turn. It work realy well.

Thanks for the advice John.
I love an excuse to buy a new tool. The VW band style ring compressor made the job easy. I would not have thought that it would be possible to remove the ring compressor with the piston and cylinder in place. It's a tight fit, but it comes out. Thanks Again. Adam.
