Big Bore 912

My dad and I have decided that we are going to take the spare (bad) 912 engine and rebuild it ourselves. The rough idea is that we are going to run 1720 Shasta's with 9.5 to 1 compression, rally ported heads by Competition Engineering, a Web Cam, and Kennedy Engineering pressure plate. Any other ideas or recommendations? This car is primarily a daily driver, but will see some time on the track.

Hi,
If you haven't rebuilt a 912/356 engine before, or you would like to learn from somebody with years of experience, buy the book "Secrets of the Inner Circle" from Harry Pellow, "The Maestro". http://www.912registry.org/faqs/books.htm
I don't mean to sound repetative (I posted this recommendation a couple of days ago on this board) but if you want to do it right the first time, the book is a must.
Regarding your engine, further performance gains will be found by balancing your pistons/rods and cc your heads (covered in Secrets). The Maestro goes into detail on calculating compression ratios as well.
If you have Weber carbs, www.cbperformance has rebuild kits and any other Weber parts that you might need.
I hope that this helps.

Hello

Donīt know shastas ( maybe something to enlight my knowledge ? ) and the other components. Everything is depending on the basiscs. The stock camshaft is a very good layout for everyday drivabilty porting isnīt needed except you need the additional flow.

The fact is that 912 engine layout is comparable to any tricked out dual port 1600cc beetle type 1.

In fact most real good made type one use Porsche 912 parts and if you look trough a SCAT catalouge you will spot many Porsche lookalikes/copys.

But the 912 engine is still more reliable, economyc and easy to drive as some hot type 1īs.

Rising RPM needs many finetuning and knowledge so you will go for more displacement and then is the big quest how good are the parts ? Most of them are not worth to put them in any engine and to think it will gain much power and keep reliable.

NPRīs where on the edge and if you had cotton in your ears.........

Grüsse
