I have destroyed 2 sets of seals while reinserting the brake pistons into the rear calipers. Of course the only way to find out is when they are installed in the car and then they leak when you are bleeding the system. Please give me some ideas. I am almost ready to send the calipers to be rebuilt. I am using ATE rebuilt kits and the pistons are not pitted. Please help!!!

I did a full brake system rebuild recently with no leaks. When inserting the pistons into the calipers, male sure you have some assy lube on the seals. Twist a little as you insert them and they should move passed the seal relatively easily.
Another problem could be particulate residue from the original seals in the grooves. Make sure the grooves are clean before installing the new seals. Crud behind the seals will cause them to ride out too far and catch on the calipers. Finally, there could be pitting on the pistons. If you pull them back out and the seals look okay, look tour pistons over carefully. If there'sa pitting on them, they need to be replaced. Good Luck! |
