Valve stems for 4.5" Fuchs??
 

Well I just took my set of newly polished 4.5"x15" Fuchs to my local tire shop for some new rubber and my tire guy said he could not find valve stems that fit. Can anyone clue me in on a source for the proper stem for this wheel?? In looking at the ones he had none were long enough to snap into the rim. The rim thickness at the hole was twice as thick as the stems he had. Any ideas?? TIA!

I would like to know the answer to this as well. When I took my Fuchs to the local tire shop, same story, common valve stems would not fit. I was in a hurry to get the car on the road, so I had them install inner-tubes. Was that a lame thing to do?

Adam, I posted this over on the 911 list as well and you may want to pop over there and read the answer. It seems that these rims are tube rims...
Do you have any feedback on running yours with tubes?? I'm thinking if I have to run tubes I might go ahead and get vintage tires to go on them as well. Check out www.coker.com They have Michelin tires in a 165HR15 that look like the orginal tires that came on the car. The sidewalls look really cool.

4,5" Fuchs are tube rims. The old wide steem tubes can be provided by oldtimer tiresuppliers. However in germany most tire fiter have a adaptor ring that reduces the steem diameter. Check out who works on classic regulary. Old Beetles part suppley are also a source. Porsche does stock them too but they are afik not in the catalog.

Thanks guys. It sounds like I did the correct thing by installing the tubes. They have been working fine for over a year. If I ever get a flat or need any tire work done, I will be on the look-out for a set of adaptors.

Actuall there is no need to rush as you will not be able to speed to much.

There are two potential dangers:

Your tire will spin on the rim and pull the tube. The valvesteem will get cut open at the edge or torn into the tire.

This will give a fast airbleed and a flat reartire is more dangerous then a flat front tire.

During constant highspeedriving the steem allways gets forced to lay flat on the outher edge. Over the years the streched side will get porus and loose air.

Now the Fuchs have a special design to prevent to much bending. This is the reson for the big recesed hole.

The lowside is that water & dirt get catched in there and can wander inside the tire.

A cheap trick is to get rubberfilment. Thats rubber out off the tube. you just fill the reces to seal the area and it also will prevent the other things too.

You also can use the old glas sealer for the 914 or 924 or some simple body sealer. Avoid silicone or acryls.
