Post Door post and sill repair.

I have to replace the door post (drivers side, LHD) and both outer sills (rocker panels)and I was wondering what is the best way to do this. I have alredy bought the panels, and the door post panel is the complete panel, from bottom to top, as are the sills.

Hello

Removing the old panels, aligne the new panels and weld them in.

If you are a absolute beginner try to get a workshop manual and look for a colision repair facilty in your neighborhood.

The rockers sometimes are the begining from a long story. So better have a back up for the unexeptet.

How are these panels welded in? Spot or seam welded? Also would I be best to do them in a specific order ie to tghe door post first then remove the sill or just to remove all the rotten panels and start from there?

Are you talking about the door posts where the latches are, on the front part of the rear quarters, or the hinge panel at the front of the door? When I did mine I removed all of the old metal first, then proceded from there. I left the doors on, so that I could check, re-check, and check again the bottom alignment of the rocker to the door. It is important to maintain the proper gap. Also, the rockers I bought didn't fit 100%, I had to space them out a little at the top to achieve the proper alignment.

Spot welds were used at the factory, I believe. I MIG welded them in. I tried the plug weld method- drilling a 1/4" hole and then welding it in to simulate a spot weld. You usually have to turn the heat up more than normal to achieve good penetration. It worked ok, but I still ran some bead welds along the edges just to make sure.

Go to http://www.912registry.org in the restoration section under floorpans there are some good posts about this procedure.

Hello

Depending on the year and exact place they are mostly spot welded. Some seam get roll welds or additional hard soldering.
