I spent the day trying to wring out the wiring nightmare that the moron who owned my car before me screwed up. I got the brake, tail and signal lights working. He had these ugly stop lights and backup lights drilled thru the rear pan, do you have any idea how many times I cursed this guy? Any advise or suggestions, is this a common problem among our beloved marque? Also, the bulb holders are rather loose, tried tightening them up with bending the tangs but they still are a little sloppy. Thanks Mike

Mike, the DPO obviously did not want to fix the wiring problems correctly. Fortunately you do. My 72 E had the same loose socket problems that you describe. Apparently the socket wears easily on the early cars or the new bulbs have smaller sockets, either of which make for a sloppy connection. If the lights work after bending out the tangs, I wouldn't worry about it. If the the bulb wiggles so much that it will not stay lit, some owners have used a small piece of copper wire to wedge the bulb into place. As for the rear pan holes make sure you use some zinc rich primer on those holes to keep any rust from forming. The correct thing to do would be to weld the holes shut.

Hello
Unfortunatly pre 69 cars have other rear light housings and a sperate coverplate with Bulbholder for each light. Slight bending will help but if done to often the things can brak or just lose clampforce. Grüsse |
