Need help with broken belt
 

Greetings:
I was at a light yesterday.... and a 82 Nissan Z pulled up......I shot out like a rocket.......but over a 1/4 mile later, I realized my battery was not charging.......I had actually melted my belt in one spot......
I am replacing it with a "Porsche Spare", and I need some help on doing it.....

Any Ideas......the summer is slipping away.

What exactly is a Porsche spare? If its a regualar fan belt all you do is get a screwdriver. You'll see a slot on the pulley for it. Put it in. This holds the pully in place. Then use a wrench to pull the nut off. When you take off the pulley count how many shims there are and in what order. Replace the belt and put the shims back in the same order as before. Tighten the pulley and check the temsion. You should be able to move the belt 1/2 inch or so. Thats all.

If your new belt is longer or shorter, you might need to change the tension by re-arranging the shims.
Once you get the nut off, there should be some shims between the pully halves and some shims between the nut and the pully half.
Adding shims between the pully halves will loosen the belt and taking shims out from between the pully halves will tighten the belt.
Once you have it back together you have to crank the engine over and check the belt tension.
Hope that you didn't go far without a belt.
No belt=no fan=HOT!

I am very impressed with such a quick response......the "porsche spare" was a reference to a "genuine porsche belt".

I will try and replace it tomorrow.
Does the nut loosen clock-wise or counter clock-wise ??? ;-).....

Hi,
It loosens counter-clockwise.
Find the noch in the back of the pully and line it up just above the screw behind the pully (I think it is at the 11 o'clock position).
Put a flat screwdriver through the noch so the screw stops the pully from rotating when you have the wrench on the nut.
This is difficult to describe...you are preventing the pully from rotating when turning the nut.
