Post What do you guys think of the 912 as a daily driver?

i need a cheap reliable daily driver (who said get a honda?) I'm looking along the 911 912 series, thanks...basically i want to semi beat on it (thus a 912 and not 911) i'm planning on a 69 912 or 76 912E...i'd preffer the 912e but living in cali i hear theyre getting harder and harder to pass smog...so pretty much i think im looking at a 69 because i dont want to deal with smog at all...

my question is who uses theirs as a daily driver? how reliable, generally, are you 912 owners' vehicles? i was thinking about getting a VW (or possibly other motor) later on down the line, keeping daily driving in mind (dont worry purests, i'll get a pure 911 when the time and finances are right)

TIA

I own my 912 specifically to drive it daily.

It's pretty darn relaible, yes it needs more maintenance than say a late model compact, but then the insurance is cheaper, it doesn't have payments, and it damn sure is more fun to drive.

Since I live in snow country and don't want to submit it to the snow/salt that's used here I drive a '97 Blazer that's loaded. Yes it's nicer than the 912 in most respcts, but still not as much fun to drive, which is why it sits all summer in the garage.

I use my 912 for a daily driver and have very few problems, infact none that weren't induced by me fidling around with the car. And even at that, it has NEVER left me stranded. The cars are a joy to drive, they are reliable, and did I metion they a joy to drive? I would recomend the 912 for a daily driver but I also would have a backup car unless you are an awesome mechanic with spares parts up the zingzang.

Oh yeh, VW engine = BAD Porsche engine = GOOD

I use my '67 912 on a daily basis, but only avarage about 15 miles a day. I run the 912 engine and it gives me no problems at all. You just have to remember though, that it is very expencive to rebuild a 912 engine when you have worn it out.

Maybe its my youthful enthusiasm, but my 912 is a definite kick in the pants to drive everyday. I can bear southern california summers with no A/C and race belts because the car is so much fun to drive. Other than starting problems that the car had when the project was underway, it hasn't given me any problems not started by myself, as it has been maintained well.

Remember to flash other Porsches, except Boxsters and 996 drivers, they don't know anything.

You're going to make the Porsche gods very very angry with that attitude!

So, to prevent your aweful, unthinkable, unacceptable remarks from affecting the good 912 owners, I tell all of you FLASH ALL PORSCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish I could drive my 912 on a daily basis but it is not a good car for the bumper to bumper commute traffic of northern california.

My left leg would look like a popeye arm from having to pump that clutch constantly. Give me Hwy 1 anytime!

I have a 1976 912E. I use as a daily driver.
I have put over 22,000 miles on it in the last 2 years with no major problems. A lot of minor fixits (especially the smog prep)
but, no regrets.

I'm a sunny day driver..2 or three days a week as I want my '67 to last or at least delay major overhauls. It has some minor rust that I haven't eliminated and want to keep it dry so I watch the weather forecast.
As a daily driver in rural areas it is great!
I love the response up and down the 5 gears
and the cornering ability which is way beyond
anything else I drive ( I have two tanks..Dodge Caravan and Volvo 240GL ).
Only place I don't like it...the major highways...too noisey for sustained speeds
over 70 and too small to compete with 18 wheelers under 70mph.
