Being a "newbie" as well as a rookie, my questions to this forum may seem a little silly. Please ignore my freshness and lend me some "veteran" advice. I am a proud owner of a 1966 912 and need some advice on the synchroznizing of my carbs (Solex). Any detailed or any advice would be appreciated. And I do own a synchro, I need your peoples expert advice to put it to work.

Greetings,
After tuning the rest of the engine, determine what you want your idle speed to be. 900 to 1100 rpm seems to be popular. Sync the carbs at idle with the linkage removed and the engine at running temp.. When you replace the linkage it should not change the idle adjustment. If it does your linkage is pre loaded and needs to be addressed. Now sync the carbs at 2500 to 3000 rpm. Find something to hold the gas pedal in for this adjustment. Adjust the throttle linkage arms to reach a common level on the meter. The only other adjustment is the idle mixture screws. I adjust mine by ear. This may lead to setting the idle balance all over again. I turn the screws in until the engine starts to miss. Then I slowly open them until the cylinder starts up again. Then I open it up another 1/4 turn and move on to another cylinder. Takes a little time, but the high speed sync makes all the difference if it was off before the adjustment. Good Luck, JMB... |
