Thanks everyone for all the input on 912E's as we discussed heads, type 4's in the 68, etc. I decided, rather than pour $6K into a 68 912 sunroof shell (no floors) for a ground up, I'd like to get a 76.
I searched for 912E's primarily in SOCal and checked out (on-line) a couple in Colorado & Nevada. I learned there are a few out there in the $8.5-9.5K that are quite nice, often with a sunroof and other options. Mileage was all over the map, and didn't seem to play much of a factor in the asking price. Since I'm in Yuma, which is pretty rural, and there are next to no Porsches in my area, anywhere was a 4-8 hour trip. Mark Allen, owner/operator of allaircooled in San Diego/Oceanside, was great help in helping me locate and evaluate several 912E's (highly recommend if you need someone to do a PPI/service your car). My requirements: mechanically strong & a sunroof. So for $6.5K, this black on black 912E #86 with a working sunroof, came home last weekend. It'll be my driver while the 69 gets the attention it deserves. BTW - USAA insurance had no problem insuring for collision because of the year. Original paint needs a little help but the body is straight and shows no sign of previous repair. Original FI, etc, and I'll use it for now. In a brochure (36 pages + technical date)that was original P promotional for the 1976 912E 911S, & 911 Turbo, there's aquote I though you'd get a kick out of: "The 912E, A popular model returns ... with improvements. Porsche enthusiasts will recall that the 912 model designation appeared in the years 1965-69 as an alternative to the 6-cylinder 911. The fact that one still sees many 912's on the road, in excellent condition, is a tribute to the car's durability and loyal following. And so we have brought back the 912 series. ...." |

Hi Scott
We have had our 912e since Feb. 2000 and the more we drive it the more we like it. I just had the trany oil changed and there was a big improvement in the shifting. The old oil was black probably over 15 years old or older. Here is a quote from Car&Driver Dec. of 1975 issue--- " And at the other end of the Porsche performance spectrum, there's the 912e-a car so sensible yet enjoyable that you begin to wonder whether Turbo Carreras are necessary at all." I have both Car&Driver and Road&Track issues with the articles on the 912e is you are interested I can scan them and email you a copy. ------------------ Chris Nicol 912e |

Thanks! I've emailed you off-line. I really like the handling of the 912E. The 69 feels different - you feel more of the road, which can be a good thing - but the 76 feels certainly more comfortable. I wanted to note that I was quite happy to learn, since I have twins (4) that use those back seats, that our insurance company would extend full coverage to the 76 because of the safety features, while they declined to do the same for the 69.
