Post autcrossed my 912E!

Hi all,

Well, I just wanted to add a little to the 912-specific banter. Today, I autocrossed my 912E in SCCA FSP. It was a riot. The car is so much more fun to autocross than the other two cars I have driven (a del Sol VTEC and a 928S) that I can't describe it.

Why FSP you ask? Well, I am informed that with carbs you go into FSP. So, my otherwise stock 912E has been inserted into a class with prepared new Beetles, vintage and well-prepared Minis. I ran a set of old cookie-cutters with well used (when I bought them) Yoko A009R tires.

I fared pretty well. More importantly, nothing broke! This was a big concern with nearly 140k miles before any racing action was seen by the little bugger.

It was only the third time I have ever autocrossed (once each in the above described cars) and I was just about a second behind the fastest time in my class.

I'd love to start a 912E autocross thread for info, if anyone has anything to add.

Thanks guys!

David

Be thankful your car made it TO the autox Anyway, glad you hade a great time. The 912's (and 912E) are great autox cars. They handle great, but not too great, which is great, comprende?? So, what other cars were in your class? I've never done an SCCA event and am interested in how it works.

Oh, and to add to your autocross thread.
Tip 1: Get the car there in one piece, preferably in good working condition
Tip 2: Make sure you've paid in advance or brought money (don't ask)
Tip 3: Don't park your car next to a Ford Ranger (Kurt B can explain why. I watched it happen)
Tip 4: Make sure you battery connection is good and tight, then check it again (again, don't ask)
Tip 5: NEVER NEVER EVER overfill your case with oil. (don't ask, again)
Tip 6: Don't run over a stack of 5 cones (especially with someone elses car)
Tip 7: Never leave your fire extinguisher near your car, even when its on top of a gig pile of stuff, they do explode when run over (by someone else of course)
Tip 8: Wear sunblock!!!
Tip 9: Don't try to do anything new that the 914 pros do on a timed run, it just don't work
Tip 10: Be absolutely positively sure your brakes work (you'll learn to work very quickly otherwise)
Tip 11: If you can shake your front wheels back and forth, don't autox

Dave, I'm stoked to hear you are autoxing your 912E! I would love to run mine through some cones, but I think there is much work to be done to mine before driving it really hard. I'm too afraid to break her. Maybe after a thorough inspection I will try some day. What did you do to prepare your car?

Hi guys,

Well, the official times are out on the internet for the local club, and I was just under 2 seconds off the fastest time in the class, and dead middle in the "pack". I think that pretty good considering the experience and car modification/preparation advantage of the others.

As for my own preparation, here is the current state of my "E":

Factory ride height (looks like a 4X4!)
no rear sway bar
factory brakes -soon to be swapped for vented
Webers in need os some adjustment
exhaust with more holes than Kandahar

Other than that, it's just an old 135k+ "E".

In the garage I have the whole suspension for next year. I've been collecting parts for a while. But, for yesterday, it was pretty much run the way it's driven-like a rattle trap old go-cart with an identity crisis.

take care,

david

No photos. I'm not a photograph-oriented person. My roommate was supposedly there taking pictures, but I haven't seen him yet. He took off for his job during the week in Cincinatti before I spoke with him.

Later,

David
