912E starting problems
 
Hi everyone - I'm used to early 912's and am new to fuel injection - Duane, PorscheDV, Chris Nicol, WFBowen, Dave - anyone have a similar experience with this starting problem?

I started it last night no problem (no problems at all for 226 miles), moved it 15 feet and it lost power and died. Starting it again was rough and produced backfires. Finally, it wouldn't start at all. The fuel guage read slightly above 1/2 tank, but I suspect from it's response that perhaps I was running out of gas. The gauge needle has been jumpy and it was on my to do list to pull the sender & check it out this weekend.

I added two gallons, turned on the switch, depressing the gas pedal and counted to ten, tried again, and it roared to life and 4,000 rpms, and then as a I release the pedal to bring it down it dies. Next attempt = same results.

It's getting gas, air, and spark, but it doesn't seem to be getting consistent fuel. It ran fine the day prior - do electric fuel pumps die that fast? Does this sound familar to anyone? Relay?

So my reliable driver abandons me at the threshold (but the 69 starts fine - is it a sign? sibling rivalry?) Thanks in advance - Scott

Hi Scott
I had a similar problem it turned out to be an intake air leak between the top of the throttle body and the air cleaner. I tightened up a hose clamp and it ran great.

Thanks Chris! I believe I can find the air cleaner and I'll look around in the vicinity. Anything specific to look for?

I tried again this evening and I can get it started for 2 seconds, even pump a bit and hear corresponding revs, but then it dies.

Hi Scott
Sounds just like a problem I had with a 2litre VW Bus when I was in the States. It would start and run only if you revved it through the roof. As soon as you let your foot off it died. Like you I knew nothing about injection! As Chris suggests it was a leaking air hose. When the problem appeared I just made sure all the hoses were on! http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

Thanks Chris & Kelvin! I found a loose hose this morning and she's back to her old smooth running self. I thought for sure it was a gas problem but, with ypu both indicating air leaks, I inspected every hose & sure enough there was one that had a clamp loose and it had slipped. Thanks again! Scott
