Air Pump?

I am trying to buy some tin for my engine and the seller asked if my 912 engine has an air pump. Well, I've been building this thing up from a longblock so it's not like it would have come with an air pump even if it needed one! Where would it be located? How would I be able to tell if I needed one?

the air pump is the smog pump that was on the 68 engine. air was pumped into the heads to help burn excess fuel (at least this is the explanation my mechanic has)

The only "air pumps" on the 912 were in 1968 as part of a smog equipped U.S engine. It was a 1 year thing. You certainly don't need it. The only noticible difference on the sheet metal would be some holes for the brackets of the smog equipment and a large bracket to hold the air pump on the left rear engine mount.
