I've got a '68 912 with starter trouble. I'm on starter #2 and when it's plenty warmed up, all I get is silenoid engagement, no starter motor. I'm starting to think I have a badly grounded starter, but cannot figure out where the connection between the engine and body is (important since the battery grounds to the body.) Anybody know where that is?

The engine is grounded to the transmission by the mounting bolts then to ground via a braided ground strap attached to the nose of the transmission to the body.

If that strap fails, the car will try and use the clutch cable as a ground and destroy the cable. A fresh ground strap is cheap insurance for any of us!
