Targa Top Dimensions

Are all targa tops from 67-73 dimensionally the same and the only difference is the type of grain on the vinyl? I have a chance to buy a 71 top at a very reasonable price-will it fit my 68? Thanks.

I am not sure if the actual top locks and pins will line up or not but I know the seals are completely different and thats where you may run into problems. A 71 seal does not fit the windscreen very well it has a double rubber edge, but then i only tried it with my 69 top which is the same as the 68, dont really know what to say, is it a top you can try before you buy?

Craig, Wish I had access to some parts manuals as the theory I have is dimensionally the are the same & you confirmed the seals are different. I didn't know that but suspected it based on different seal part numbers in catalogs. SO, if they are dimensionally the same & I ordered the 68 seals for the 71 top (assuming pins & lock downs are the same) it would work? Unfortunately the top is 2 states away and of course the seller says "no problem"--
Thanks any & all for inputs. Whadda ya think/know?

Check with a guy named Dan at CarsInc (www.carsincnj.com) - he specializes in Targa top restoration, is in NJ (I know you just got that great looking Targa in Mass, so are you in the NorthEast?). He might be able to give you the answer and may also have a top that's correct. I've gotten a few things from him so far and his prices are good and service is excellent.

Guys, was able to find some parts manuals this AM a local old timer had stashed away. First of all, Craig, you know stuff man, good on you & thanks.
OK: There is ONE part number for targa tops for 67-70 HW & SW models. Dimensionally the same, all rails & fittings the same part #'s, only difference in part numbers anywhere from 67-70 is the pattern for the roof material. Part #901.565.002.41 is the number for the top & it is the same number for all 911 models.
Also, front & rear top weatherstrips are the same part numbers for 67-70. The roll bar seal is the same # for 67-70 HW & SW targas.
Front w/s weatherstrip is same 67-70.
Thanks for the inputs & hope this info helps others. Cheers, George

I've got a top for a 68, think I still have the original stowage bag for
it also, let me know if you might be interested, it will need to be recovered but the headliner is still in good shape.

Craig, I'm waiting for Jerome to contact & finalize, but if I end up with it I will make you a butcher paper, exact pattern for size & location of all snaps. Will take photo of cover grain & inside also. Cart before the horse...but if it ends up on my car, I'd be glad to do that for you. We'll keep in touch. George

Cgarr, when my daughter gets home this weekend I'll send you some pic's (I can take em but thats about it-not exactly my forte')
there actually was a wrap for the targa top with snap buttons -
looks like a big + sign, and a smaller stowage bage for the wrap.
Either would be easy to duplicate using most any vinyl products.
The stowage bag actually looks like the bag a sleeping bag might go in. More info (and hopefully pic's) later, Jerome.

A word of caution. The redesign of the seals, gutters etc. was first used in July of 1969. It is possible to have a '69 with either version.

A late 1969 Targa will have the newer design.

Thats right, and that was the problem I was having, trying to find out did I have the early or late model? Since they only made 800 912 targas in 69 and I have one of the last 200 made and my top is still the early style I would guess they may have never made a 912 using the late top, the 911 may be a different story.
