what could i get for my 69 912?
 

Hello all-

Just a quick question for you guys, what is a reasonable price for my 1969 912? The wife is on me to sell it, as i drove it about 3 times in the last 2 summers.

I think I wrote back and forth with you a bit last summer about your car after mine was in an accident. It sounds like a great car, and if it's as solid as it looks you should be able to get 9 or 10k for it pretty easily I would think.

i remember talking to you last summer, thanks for the information. I searched this forum and found a link to 912 values, but the range was so large i wasnt sure what to start at price wise.

If your car is what you say it is, it is worth way more then $10,000! I'd say more like $15,000. People are starting to appreciate the 912 and the prices are going up. What can you buy for $15,000 that matches it? Look around and you will see that there is nothing out there that is as nice for the money. What's a nice 356 SC coupe going for? $30,000 and more out here in California.

I just sold my 912 Targa for $15,000. It was nice, but had almost 200,000 miles on it and was used as a daily driver! Your car looks better and has a whole lot less miles and you know where it's been all of its life. My car sold within two weeks of listing it.

Your car should as other very nice 912s, sell in the mid teens. If what you say about your car is true and it looks as good up close as it does in the pictures, you should be patient and wait for the right buyer. They are out there.

I had no idea it would be worth that much.

Here is a list of things that could detract from the value:

-crack in the dash/speaker cover
-driver door armrest has cracks
-clock face is scratched and doesnt keep time
-speedo will bounce sometimes below 10 mph (cable going bad?)
-starter selenoid sticks when car hasnt been driven, but will work fine when the car is run consistently.
-unsure if heating system works, never tried it, however the lever is not seized and appears to work fine.
-probably could use some new door/window gasketing.


as far as rust goes, i havent seen any in obvious places, a few minor spots on the rims. Where should i look for rust? any problem areas that are common?

as to how it runs, once its been started for the year (after storage) it runs well, especially after the tune-up (carbs checked, new plugs, new bosche blue coil, plug wires, valves gapped, new bosch 050 dist., timed)

I have the old solex carbs and air cleaners but they are in dire need of a rebuild....i just wanted to keep the original parts.

I would start at $15K with that car...the prices have gone up!!

Besides, like the previous poster said, what else is out there like it?

You have MGAs commanding $9K - $20K, Austin-Healey Sprites getting up to $12K, VW Bugs getting upwards of $10 - $20K....this car can outhandle, out accelerate, and out"look" all of them!!!

What is the worst that could happen....you might get buyers in a bidding war and get more than you ask!!

I checked over here with buddy that had a body job done by , PINO AUTOBODY (i think he is the dude that did seinfelds car, and does only vintage cars and mostly porsches)

fixing the typical cancer spots, new floors from obsolete parts, new weather seals and a new paint job cost him 6,500 on his 69 912.

The body might as well be called "brand new" because its sweet..

unless your body is like that.. 15Gs just seems excessive for a 912


but then again, what do i know. heh!

One very important thing to remember when selling is to honestly represent the car as to its current condition, mods and anything you have added, removed etc.

Don't try to hide anything either, knowledgable buyers will find it.

Thanks for all the replies. When the final decision is made to sell the car i would disclose everything about the car that i could find as far as imperfections/mods go. Since its been in my family i pretty much know whats been done to it, the only thing i wouldnt know is where to look for trouble spots for rust.

after reading the replies im still not sure what a fair price would be...

Rust Spot

well.. hmmm since the 1969 is "pre-galvanized-years" then potential rust can be foudn every where.

obvious places:

FRONT: battery tray, front suspension pan

MIDDLE: rocker panel, floors, pedal assembly

REAR: corner where the rear windshield collects water

These are the most obvious, if theres rust in these places, theres a good chance that rust is hidden someplace else.
