Question Help with '76 912E Oil Cooler

Hi! Since this is my first post, let me start by saying, "Great site!"

I have a completely stock 912E, and the oil cooler is leaking (just a bit) . I have a new cooler, tools, and time. I am planning to drop the engine in a couple of weeks. Is there an easier way? Are there any gotcha's?

Thanks

You can do it with out removing the motor. You need to remove the tin that is the rear peice. Then remove the fan and then the blower housing. The oilcooler will be right there. fairly easy job It will just take some time.

How did the job go? Was it just a bad seal or was the cooler itself leaking?

Lightbulb

I hope to find out this weekend. Being the retentive type, I wanted to wait until I could borrow a digital camera to capture the magic. Then I will be able to post the results and process for anyone else that would care to tackle this job. I will keep you posted. Thanks again for all of the support.

Here is my new car. I bought from the 2nd owner with 60K original miles.

Does anyone know if you can replace the bearing on the "driveshaft" that runs the belts (comes off the fan) on a 912E. I have pulled the unit (on the way to the oil cooler) and have mild bearing noise. I have access to a 12 ton press, but I don't want to press off the pulley / driveshaft assembly until I know that I can replace the bearing.

If it can be replaced, what is the bearing number / make?

If anyone has done this, advice is appreciated.. Thanks

If you are not running a/c then I believe that they are the same part as the one on the 914 so they should be available. I run a/c, got PO'd at the lack of parts, and the stupid asses...came up with an alternate solution that eliminates the drive shaft assy altogether...IIRC , I've posted pics here, STF and 912 board....I think...

Wink

Well, In between hurricanes (FL) I have managed to disassemble the car to the point where I could change the cooler. Here is a quick picture of the disassembly. I will hope to put back together over the next weekend or so, depending on the "honey-do" list.

Thanks again!

I see that the a/c compressor was upgraded. Interested in seeing the bracket, is it the stock unit with an adapter plate...please show pics...
