i would like to know where the best place to mount an electric fuel pump. It seems like there are few choices. Near the torsion bar in the rear or the boot. The boot seems easiest.
Also, does any one know the best way to wire it. I suppose just find a lead that works off the key switch that has a fuse but what about a shut off in case of an accident.

Well...
REALLY ask yourself if you cant save your original mechanical pump. Most electric pumps are a fairly crappy alternative. I'd search for a Carter rotary pump if you must go electric, MUCH quieter- nearly silent - and lasts forever. Mount it up under the tank if you can, they like to push rather than suck gas. And mount it in rubber, it will be quieter and last longer. you can get little radiator mounts at a local auto supply store - small rubber block with a stud coming out each side, like on mid 80's Vw rabbits. For my .02 REBUILD you stock pump, its meant to go on the car and works best for all normal and most 'other than normal' use. Get a rebuild kit off Ebay, they'e like $40, just got rid of a previously installed elec pump on my car, SO MUCH better. For the wiring, make sure you FUSE the hot wire one way or another. And jumping it off keyed power will work- but I use a 70's VW BUS heater Fan relay, run it off keyed power which in turn jumps the fuel pump power straight off battery- so your fuel pump doesn't leech power off your ignition circuit....I doubt it makes a difference, but I sound smart! Rebuild your Stock pump. Rebuild your Stock pump. Rebuild your Stock pump. Rebuild your Stock pump. cheers! Bob O

I bought a rotary elect. pump from CB Performance, Works really well, no noise, I've had it for 2 years. I mounted it in the smugglers box, inertia switch is a good idea though. Summit and Jegs carry them I believe. For wiring the smugglers box is near the fuse block, use the key on section and fuse the pump, really easy.

Thanks for the info. A couple more questions though. It is a pierburg pump and it states in the instructions to mount it below the tank. I was joust going to mount it up near the tank in the place you suggest because of ease of installation but did not want to burn out the pump.
Also, can I keep the manual pump mounted and keep them in series or do i need to dismount the pump?

I made a block off plate and removed mine, most elect. pumps require no more than 12" above the gas tank, I'm not familiar with your "pierburg pump" the closer to tank level though the better.

NO!
You cant run them in series. No way. You can leave your old pump installed with no hoses hooked up...wont hurt anything. You must make sure your new fuel pump only puts out about 3.5 LBS of pressure or you will overpower your inlet valves and you will flood your engine and run rich and other bad stuff. Bob O
