912E for sale

Well, it looks like Arnold has declared my 912E will never be street legal in California. So, the car is back on the block. I'm here in Pennsylvania right now but only for a couple weeks so quick sale is best. Let me know if you're interested or it's going on ebay.

The car has had a lot of work done to it. Suspension has less than 5k miles on it: 21/26 OEM Porsche torsion bars (rear bars are out of a 930 with about 20k miles on it), Bilstein Sports, 22mm front and rear adjustable ARB's, sway-a-way adjustable spring plates, poly bushings, 930 tie rods, stainless braided brake lines, strut tower brace, car would come with four factory Porsche steel wheels with chrome hubcaps & 185/15 all season Kumho tires for street use.

Car has been lowered from the horrible 912E original ride height so it doesn't look like a monster truck anymore.

911SC era factory black leather sport seats in fair condition (driver's side has a tear).

The sunroof works, nice body.

The car is White.

RSA door panels, nice Tequipment Porsche mats, nice dash, nice interior. Cleans up well.

The engine is in great shape although it is leaking some oil. Oil pressure is great. About 25k miles since total rebuild. Over the summer I just installed newly ported/polished heads (done by AJ Sims on 2.0 914 heads), new rings, etc. Still two liters with Euro flat top pistons. dual Dellorto 40DRLA's, Permatune ignition, 009 with modified advance curve, new Empi linkage, etc. Brand new NGK plug wires. VDO oil pressure gauge, fuel pressure gauge, Holley fuel pressure regulator, powder coated fan shroud.

Gearbox is the 923 (i.e. the 912E version of the 915) with the 7:31 r/p. Newer syncros and sliders. Shifts great, never grinds. Factory short shift kit. Momo Race knob (aluminum ball, nothing fancy). Newer bushings. Fluid changed at least every year religously and I've owned it a little over six years. Flywheel was lightened and balanced by Ollie's just this May.

The car is tight and fun to drive. Revs great. Lots of fun. Gives other Porsches and other cars fits at autocrosses. Would also be a good candidate for a six conversion since a lot of the other work is already done.

Email me for more details. Can't decide if I really want to sell it but who knows. If someone is really looking.

Would very seriously consider a trade for a solid, running early 911, 914 or '69 912 that is smog-exempt in California.

Asking $11k

I've probably got double that invested not including my time!

FenderGuy 08-14-2004 07:55 PM

Post pics and price Dave you'll get more interest that way

david c. 08-14-2004 09:29 PM

Yeah, I know. I just really can't figure out what I would take for it to make it worthwhile. I've got so much more invested than it's worth that it makes it tough to nail.

I guess 11k cash would do it but even that is a real beating. Let me see if I can find a good photo. Geez, even at 11k you could find a very nice 76 911 with a rebuilt motor or a solid original SC... I love the 912E but selling one is a tough road to hoe. I'll probably just keep it unless I come across someone looking for a well-prepared 912E. That would really be the only legitimate potential buyer. I'm not striking chords with the "I want a 911" crowd. This is a wholly-different beastie.

Dave,

BTDT, with 911 prices so low, its difficult to justify a "high" price on an "E"...I quit counting how much I have invested...I estimate $25-30k...too painful to look at the reciepts :( :(

tis true but 912E's do seem to get strong prices on ebay, surprisingly.

You really can't judge ebay on prices as its not a true account on how many deals fall apart, Ive seen 912e's and 911's met the reserve price only to be put back into auction a week or 2 later...
Current ebay deals
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2486998025&catego ry=6429 power options this one seems good

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2486686119&catego ry=6429 celebrity owned? and not even high enough

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2485675192&catego ry=6429

whats the real milage of this car?

What you can do is price them by autotrader or cars.com and prices range from $4500 to $8000 ...some of the $8k have high miles, no power options, no ac ( i would want that in Arizona) and it amazes me for the same price you can get a 911 as Bob said....

COLDBASS 08-17-2004 09:04 AM

Dave,

You may want to consider listing the car for Sale on the 912 Registry...also, you didnt mention the cam type, have you considered simply restoring the EFI and keeping the car?

Frank,

I have seen some sweet early 911's listed in the AZ area. Let a 72 sportomatic get away :( :( :( :( :( cuz I was being cheap...

Oh, well. Once the E is back on the road the quest shall continue...

FenderGuy 08-17-2004 10:48 AM

Bob,

I have seen the ones around arizona and not too impressed maybe the 79 turbo look cab in tucson but its over priced. I have someone currently looking at a 77 turbo look cab in Houston for me. If that doesnt work out, then I may have to bite the bullet and go for a g-50 cab as I have been so many nice ones around. I dont think the "E"'s going to work anytime soon, even thought it would be nice to have a daily 912e and 911 cab for weekend fun :D

COLDBASS 08-18-2004 11:02 AM

Dave,

Sorry for hijacking your thread...

Frank,

You just never know, I passed on a 75 Carrera - great deal but once I started thinking about it, it was too pristine to use as a daily driver. Keep in mind that I wanted this type of car for approx 20 years. So, I decided to stay away from the unique cars as I will thrash it or modify it too much. My point is that personal finances change and when it comes down to making mortgage payments/kids college tuition or keeping that early car...well.

Not that I wish to capitalize on someones misfortune, its just that one never knows...keep lookin...

Dave sorry about the hijack

Bob,
I have no kids, no mortgage payments no college payments. and no wife (to take my money :D) .as far i am concerned i am free...right now is the right time for a Turbo look cab or a g-50 cab, no worries I plan on keeping my current daily driver as a G-50 cab (if that turbo look doesnt go through) would be a weekend ride or 1 or 2 day ride to work...Still will always have my eyes open for that 912e though to take place of my current daily driver

david c. 08-18-2004 11:54 AM

Hey guys, no problem. I really didn't foresee a lot of interest in the car anyway.

Sounds like you and I are in similar positions, that is no "liablilities". Although, my situation may change in the next month (did someone say marriage? LOL).

One of the guys with a 72 has the kids tuition thing over his head so he may elect to sell to me...

PorscheDV 08-19-2004 03:52 AM

sorry to hear about the 12e dave! man, that car has come a long way! i just love the 12e's becuase theyre just quirkey...ive always rooted for the underdog!

i'd love to get it off you...but i live in cali too..and dont bother with the MFI thinking you'll pass smog...unless you have prestine heat exchangers, forget it!

and then there's the other way to pass your 912e...

Then I can go early 911 shopping in Southern California!

Man what a deal your giving him from the $11k you are asking? I'll buy it for $3600 :D Your brothers lucky

Dave you have a PM

COLDBASS 08-19-2004 01:22 PM

Dave,

Let me know when you arrive in Cali. I should have my E completed next month and I would like to have you spin it and get an opinion on how it compares to your E...

Bob,

I'd love to! And you can tour around in my old Volvo and laugh at the body roll. It's hilarious and, as a result of the Porsche staying with my brother, will be my next project. I'll be Porsche-less for the first time since I was a senior in college! But there are a few guys out there (like John Parker at VPD) with Volvo P1800's that kick 911 tail at vintage racing if you can believe it.
