Seat Adapters?
Since I love you guys so much I have another question....
I recently bought seats off a guy who said the seats were out of a '78 911. I was told the seats would fit right into my car ( a '69 912) and they are about an inch and a half short on either side of the width, 3 inches total. What do I do? |

Make or buy adapters. Most of the Porsche parts dealers sell them, I believe Pelican has them, Proformance Products and Mid-America, previously known as Tweeks. You should have no trouble locating this item. I think they sell for under a $100.00.

3/16 flat metal stock is what I used, you nead to drill and tap for small bolts, knowledge of metal working would be helpful. The catologs have photos as I remember, and know $15.00 is not what they cost.

I recently purshased a pair of high back seats with the adaptor sliders already on them, since they were previously installed in a '66. I found the seats sat too high with the adaptors and made a permanent mounting bracket out of a 3 foot piece of 3/16" x3" flat stock from local Orchard Supply. Careful measurement and drilling oversized holes to accommodate measuring/fitting errors and it popped right in. Total cost is $8.oo and uses existing hardware. I am the only one who drives my car and settled for expediency of a fixed bracket. Added benefit of lowering seat heigth about 2" from the adaptor height. The high back seats are such a comfort improvement, and weigh about half of the weight of the old seats.

Seat Adaptors
I made mine from 1/4 x 3" wide x 18" long. A trailer supply company sold me the two cut 18" pieces for $15.
I removed the original adjustable seat rails, placed them over the flat iron, marked the holes from the originals to the new iron and drilled them. Bolted these in place in the car, then took the adjustable seat rails from the 1991 944 seats, placed them over the new home made and now installed rails, and marked the holes for the 1991 seat. Drilled these out to. I also ground down the corners of the new rails. Bolted the 944 seat rails bach to the seats and then bolted the 944 seats in. No problems and cost me less than $20! Alternately one can bolt the new adapters to the seats and then install. Might be easier. My seats are also adjustable.

how would you fit 1993 RS America seats in a 1968 912?

RS America Seats
I'm not familiar with RS America seats. But, I think the concept is the same.
The problem I had with the 944 seats is they are narrower than the stock 912 seats, and as a result, the mounting rails on the 944 seats would not bolt up (not wide enough) to the stock mounting base. Therefore, I made rails out of flat steel that bolt to the original 912 mounting base (attached to the floor) that extend out towards the center of the seat area from both sides effectively making the original mounting base wider towards the center. Center the new seat on the extended and wider rails/mounting base, mark and drill holes in the rail/base/adaptor to match your new seats, and bolt them in. Depending on the width of your new seats, you might have to reinforce/prop up the seat mount bases you fabricated to ensure your modification is safe (not sagging towards the center) Mine was no problem as the 944 seats in my opinion, wide enough to bolt up to the adapters fairly close to the original mounting base, without causing the center to sag or put too much pressure on point where the adapters were bolted to the original base.
