I'm restoring this 68 912. Right now I have the engine all taken appart and I'm putting a big bore kit in there and a new cam. Basicaly the engine will be brand new. I wonder if anybody knows how much horse power do you gain installing the 1.8 conversion. If anyone knows any other ways to get more horse power out of that engine please let me know. I'm icluding a picture of the car so that you guys can see how it looks right now.

The car looks good, I don't know how much increase in HP with a big bore kit. That said you can pick up added horse power with a Bursch exhaust system, bigger cam, modern carbs / Webers. I'm sure other will have more info. What kind of wheels are those?
Good luck, Chas. 69/912 63/356

For all intents and purposes don't bother with the 356 / 912 powerplant if you want POWER. Seriously- I'm going to get yelled at for this!
I LOVE those engines, they kick ass, but you risk serious loss of $$ by trying to get power out of them. The 86mm kit adds a few HP (and HEAT!), an aggressive cam and some good Carb / Valve / head work and a Bursch get you some more. But 912 heads are pretty good for flow to begin with- you REALLY have to know them to unlock more power. High lift cams wear valve guides and cause BENT VALVES. LOTS of money and LOTS of work will get you 130hp- and maybe it's reliable. Build your 616 engine and make it reliable, then on the side build your 4 cyl monster engine. You want affordable reliable power for less money? Go VW type 4- find a set of 912E Engine tins (Jim @ EASY has some) and 2.0 914 heads and any type 4 engine and spend $2500 on some 104mm Shasta p/c's a stroker crank and good valve/lifters combo and get 160hp. Very reliable. That puts you in the the power range of the 2.7 6 cyl and a couple hundred lbs lighter. Then get 3,4, and 5th gears out of a 901 tranny and swap yours- For a street car the 616 engines are awesome fun, they're great- but speaking from experience it gets scary cost-wise to make them scream. And keep working on it, that's a great car! Just my .02 Bob O
