Finally Got My 912.....
delivered in the biggest rain storm in 2 years. already had water in the trunk and a small bit under the front seat by the time I got it covered up- have not even been able to look at it too much yet. The front left torsion bar is all but not connected due to rust from battery. I will need a front torsion bar pan for sure. I really do not know where to start- I started to look under the front floor mats but there are several layers of insulation or something... should I just tear it out or not? The rest of the underbody seems pretty solid really. There is a small gap between the rocker and the rear seat but not too bad. There is some line routed to the rear of the car underneath that has been diconnected that could be fuel line, I dont know. At this point I do not even know how to open the engine compartment
seriously.... Is there any solution to the 68 turn signal lenses other than finding a replacement unit? anyone have a retro fit unit that is less expensive? I am still waiting on my key and ignition to show up too(not that I'll need it anytime soon.) Hope to do a leak down test this weekend and see whats up with the engine. Sitting 10 years... should I put some mystery oil in the barrels? How expensive is it to replace the rear window seal and the seals around the trunk etc... Trunk does not even appear to have them at all... ATL- please give me a call so we can talk 404-441-6504 thanks

pulled the motor yesterday....
it is locked up....
The shfter is swaying in the breeze not connected to the linkage. Is this a common issue? Also, the teflon bushing around the joint in the "tunnel opening between the rear foot wells is badly worn and deteriorated and I think it will need to be replaced. Fanbelt shot, throwout bearing... how can I check it? I am going to do a valve job, replace the rings, hone the cylinders, check and rebuild the carbs amd put the motor back in. take a part the brakes, clean them etc... Are there any parts in the hydraulics that are notorious? Seals or o rings or anything? I also need a new gas pedal as the rubber has rotted and it is no longer connected to the floorboard! Oh yea- what is the preferred method for removing the generator nut? How can I "lock" it up so I can get some torque on it... I will post some pics soon- |

damn that's lots of questions...
the shifter doesn't ever feel TIGHT, like a modern car...the bushings are pretty easy to find, Pelican, tweeks, etc have them... can't really check the TB until you split the engine from the trans. don't split the calipers unless they're leaking...there is a special too for setting the pistons at a correct angle. there should be a notch on the generator pulley on the back side...stick a pry bar in there to lock it up...it takes a little practice... i have the factory 912 engine book about taking it all apart...if you need to have a look at it/get torque specs and stuff. hope that was all of the q's...nice to see you got the engine lid open.

68 FOR SURE- IT IS KARMAN BODy..... pretty much just .like the example in Daves 912 page of the vin# anomaly. Also- STEVE.... did you get my PM??? Anyone know Steve's email address...(atl porsche)

From everything I've seen in your pics and other posts it's a '66 with some parts borrowed from a '68. It would be a royal PITA to swap out the guage cluster from a 66 into a 68. In any case, enjoy the car!
BTW my '66 is a karman body, not sure what it would have to do with the year of the car...they were made by both from the beginning.... Quote:

its a 68... the ODO was a 66.... only other 66 part I know of is the petrol tank! I have thew motor apart and will need some assitance... see other post....

Does it have the smog pump?
The calipers are EASY to rebuild and I can bet that they will need it after sitting for 10 years. Do not split the halves! You can use air to pop the pistons out and after cleaning them up and installing new seals line up the "notch" to 22 deg which is BTW in line with the spindle center. BTW I have a full set of almost new NPR P&Cs but don't want to split the set. The rings did not even set before the motor seized. It was built by a bug guy and he bolted the wrong trans and it pushed the crank forward. 1o miles and toast. I also have cases, cranks, rods, flywheels, a 4 speed trans, solexes, a 023 dizzy and lots of little stuff. |
