jack placement (newbie question)
 

Newbie question.

I want to lift the rear of the car in my garage so I can get to the underside better. Where are good points to place the floor jack to lift and where should I place the jack stands?
Also, I'm going to change the oil and plugs soon. Is there anyway to get at the rear plugs better? From what I see, they are buried in there and possiblytaking the air-cleaners off will give me more room. Please point me in the proper direction.
OK, the car has been in the family for the past 35 years. It was my uncles. Now I have it and would like to do some of the work to it. He always took it to someone local to get worked on but that person no longer lives here. So this is all new to me. I might become a "VERY" regular poster here unless someone says get lost. :confused:

SMF ... jacking these cars up is kind of scary due to the possibility of finding rot where you least want it. The jacking posts mid-car below the rockers are the designated lift points. You lift the entire side of the car from there. This is somewhat difficult with the factory hand crank and still tough with the scissors jack I use ... mostly because the spring rates on the opposite side of the car don't give much and you are lifting probably 65% of vehicle weight. Once up I put the jack stands under the drive shafts at the wheel (This may not be the right thing to do). All this considered, when doing stuff at the rear .... I use drive up ramps.
As for the plugs ... good luck. Only # 3 is difficult. In frustration I removed the sheet metal adjacent to the left side of the engine and attacked it from below. Use extreme caution inserting a new plug .. use a plug socket that grips well.

I live just outside of Lancaster. Lititz to be exact. I've been searching a lot about how to jack. I always thought that jacking it would be tricky. I found some website, I think his name is Dave, and he's done a lot of work and has a lot of pics showing what was done. Thanks for the response. My 912 sat in a garage all it's life. My uncle had it since '69'. doesn't have any rust, well just a small spot under the battery. Dam thing. Nothing major. I've been looking to see if I can find other rust and I can't. I guess my uncle's excessive complusive condition rubbed off on me and the 912 is now the product of a good home.
As for the plugs, I'm guessing I'll just tackle them this weekend. I layed under the car friday night for about an hour just wiping it off and looking at how to dis-assemble things. I might take some of the sheet metal you were talking about off just to avoid a possible mental breakdown. I could clean thing while its off. Again thanks.
