912 fumes
I have been getting a good amount of fumes in what I thought was a nice tight cabin. I know about the heat exchangers but have not checked anything yet. The car was originally from California. I need to still go through the heat system but can anyone pin-point a common area(cables, hoses) Thanks.

If you have fumes in the cabin you must have an exhaust leak somewhere. Otherwise the only thing you'd smell is heat from the engine, maybe a dirty oily smell if the engine is dirty.
The headers on my car appeared to seal when I bought it but after removing them and laying a straight edge across them it was quite apparent they weren't flat and didn't seal properly. It was such a small leak you couldn't hear it over the headers themselves and you couldn't feel the leak by hand because of the air momvement from the cooling fan. But take a trip and you could smell and taste the exhaust. A little time with a file and some new gaskets and a much more enjoyable driving experience... |

My car has a similiar problem. I've tracked it down (at least I think) to an oil leak from the crankcase breather hose onto the right-side exhaust, which then sends the fumes into the cabin. I found a list of other possible causes through the 912 Registry. Good luck!

I totally shut off all heat this weekend and found I had much less fumes(mainly the front windscreen defrost switch-on dash). Only at idle did I get a short whiff. I will be pulling the engine out this Jan. to do a complete rebuild, soup to nuts. Thanks for the replies!
