starting long dormant engine..help/advice?
Hi there,
recently bought a 912 (engineless) and now have an engine. I have cleaned everything up as best I can.. tins all removable ancillaries engine bay cleaned out of sound deadening stuff. Just want to collect thoughts on correct starting procedure. Is there a way to manually crank the oil pump over to coat the bearings/crank/cams/etc before putting any compression/juice to it? also, what weight oil do these beauties take? I am a castrol nut and I figure I will be ok, it has never failed me in my MG's. any advice or pointing to already established websites would be great. thanks Kevin |

Pull all the spark plugs, squirt a very small amount of oil in each hole. Crank the engine over (plugs out) for awhile. Plugs back in, fire it up. Run it above idle (assuming the green light goes out) for a bit, then shut off. Double check everything (heads aren't loose, not leaking, etc). If everything is OK, you should be good to go.
I use Castrol 20w50 in both of my air-cooled cars. |
