Heat shield

I am in the process of refurbishing my 66 912. The old heat shield (or sound deadener) behind the motor is in many, many pieces, and I ordered a new one. It is not the same material as the original (undoubtedly better!), but it is silver, and I really don't want that. I was thinking of simply painting it flat black. Any suggestions?

I used some locally bought insulation and sound deadner and finished it off with some 22 gauge sheet metal painted in my favorite color.

That really looks great! It also, however, looks like a lot of work! I am up to my ears in my 912, and I need an easier way out. I was really into cars for 25 or 30 years, and I have had and worked on quite a variety. About 10 years ago I gave up on the cars because, #1 I am getting too old to be crawling around under them. #2 I got tired of unsuccessfully trying to get the grease off of my hands and fingernails. I took up shooting, and working on guns is a helluva lot easier! When they are fixed, they stay that way. However, the car fever is incurable, and I am back into it again full force.
Thanks for the help, Tom Lewis

Tom,
When I did my 69 several years ago I got the insulation from Pelican...I think. It was a dull black finish with foam underlayment, about 3/4" thick. If the only hang up is the color why not use some heat resistant flat black or semi gloss spray paint and be done with it. By the way thanks for the info on Mr. Bieker, I'm sending my Solexs to him shortly.

Heat Shield

C. Clark, Thanks for the reply. I purchased my heat shield from Pelican recently. I guess they no longer can get the style you have. My initial plan was paint, but it some kind of filler with what appears to be an aluminum foil shell. My concern is whether the paint will adhere to the foil. It is quite thin and folds easily and I am afraid this will produce cracks in the paint. At this point, it is definitely worth a try as other methods could become extremely complicated. You made a good move sending your carbs to Bieker. He is very skilled, knowledgeable, and simply a great guy!
