Need a name
 

I am restoring my wife's 66 912. There are foam rubber hoses on both sides of the engine compartment that appear to be defrosters for the rear window. They are in bad need of replacement, but I have been unable to find them as I do not know what the part name is. Can anybody help me?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads4/+1100793990.gif

They are the heater hoses that run heat from the engine up to the rear window for defrosting. I used plain heater hose from any automotive outlet. It may not be worth it trying to find original porsche ones if they even exist anymore.

Damon, thanks for your prompt reply! The auto parts store would probably be the best idea. The originals were pretty flimsy as they were made from foam rubber. The only reason for originality would be interest in concours, but this car is going to be a driver. I really love the 912! It is probably the most under rated sports car there is. The 911's have really put them in the shade, but I prefer the 912 to the 911. It is a beautifully simple machine, and its balance and quickness is more important to me than the speed and acceleration of the 911. I just love driving the fours. I am getting too old to be crawling around under cars so I am getting rid of my small collection except for my 912 and 356. I had a 74 911 that I gave to my son as it needed a tear down and it just wasn't worth it to me.

The only solution I've seen is to use the metal/paper type hose that I think Damon is referring to. As far as I can figure, the foam insulation is for noise control and merely jackets the tubing. I also looked for originals, but no luck (& even if I found some NOS it would probably be ready to disintegrate from age.) Check out http://www.mcmaster.com/ and look at pgs. 3258 on up for high temp insulation material.
