Chas:
I had the K&N conversions on a car - no problems but pricey. IMO I still think the best setup is the large round cannister style air cleaners with the snorkels facing the middle of the engine. Porsche must have spent some R&D time on those, but I don't know if the elements are still available. |

Bill,
Harry Bieker likes them too, I've got a set but they're just so darn big and ugly. Do you know anything about Knecht air cleaners? Thanks, Chas.

The Knechts (I'm referring to the all metal, oval mesh type) are probably the easiest to maintain & unlike the K&Ns I had, with the long through-bolts, there's virtually no chance of anything dropping into a throat.

Knechts are getting real hard to find now, I sold the only pair I've seen around in a while about 6 months ago. If you get some of the snorkel types take them to an auto parts store and 'search' through the air filter elements you can find replacements just keep one of the boxes (air filter number) for future reference. I have a set of the snorkel types but someone cut the snorkel tube off of them. Good luck in your search.

The air filter elements for the snorkel types are available through places like Strasse or Stoddard.
The mesh type filters do a terrible job of filtering, and are very noisy. They also weigh a ton. Those huge snorkel canisters are actually lighter, the paper elements filter the air much better, and they're a LOT quieter. You can find decent examples on Ebay all the time. The K&Ns are just as noisy as the mesh type. Filtering seems OK if you keep them properly oiled, though there are a number of people who feel they don't filter as well as paper elements. btw, both the oval mesh and the canister/snorkel style filters are made by Knecht. |
