912e head rebuild
hi all.....after a bit of advice...and since this is where my car came from (US) who better to ask....eh.....I drive a 76 912e with sunroof and AC....converted to carbs....
now to the problem....until recently it had a very bad oil leak...which was found to be the oil cooler.....but before this....it would smoke (oil burning) from the exhaust.....only when it is hot and only on over run....(lift off).....just a little bit....but enough to be embarrasing.....eh.....it was running 30w.....i changed this to a 20-50 multi....with mild detergent...and it was a lot less...... now i have change the oil cooler....and it smoke a lot know.....like......loads....i put this down to the better oil pressure from no leak....and the fact it know has a semi-sinthetic.... so i beleve...and so do a lot of other people that the valve guides are worn......the rings ie no smoke on start up and bores seem ok as no oil is leaking through overnight...... ok......do you guys think this is so...???? is this a big job...???? and should i replace the valves while the heads are off...??? maybe a skim...??? gas flow...??? any help or information on this model car would be great.....as there is not much available in the uk...... thanks in advance justin

headwork
Not a big job , if all is OK.... if you have cracks then.....
You might need guides or valves , or both. Or something else... Locate other 912E owners from UK. There are a few.... atleast Nige-912E is from UK. he might know some places. Even a GOOD VW shop might be able to help you. Good luck with that 912E ! How did it end up there ? |

Dude
If you're unsure as to how bad the problem is or need advice you might be best getting in touch with James Calvert at Stateside Tuning http://www.statesidetuning.co.uk/ He's one of the UK's main 914/type 4 specialists and has been racing 914s for years, I bought all my parts from there and he knows his stuff. I'm almost wishing I took my whole car/motor there to be sorted what with the problems I seem to be having at the moment. They're in Little Moreton south of Warwick, not that local to you, but it would well be worth the trip. As for the South of England, there are loads of Type 1 specialist down there, they may be able to help, though I can't name any from experience. Sounds to me you gonna need at least new exhaust valves and guides as the symptons are the same as I experienced. My inlets where OK and reusable. You can never tell until the heads are removed. The exhaust valves on mine could be moved 3-4mm in all directions in its guide!!! It used about 1 litre of oil per tank full!!! Skimming heads don't apply really to this engine layout. Gas flow, there is abit of porting that can be done these heads flow pretty good anyway, but unless you're going for a full rebuild with new cam larger barrels and pistons its probably not worth the expenditure of going big time on the head mods. You can at least match port the carb manifolds to the heads, its a DIY if alittle time consuming, do a search on the t'internet about it. This might have been done when your engine was swapped to carbs anyway. Hope you get it sorted, once mine is back on tarmac, we'll have to meet the cars up again, its about time UK 912e owners got together, hell there would be about 6 of us!! I think Mark has a photo or two of the last gathering, it was a massive event there was 2 of us. Last edited by Nige-912E; 06-21-2005 at 01:40 AM.. |
