Mic:
The Weber 40IDF is about the only one to use (44's are too big for most 912 engines and Dellortos are very rare these days.) As for the manifolds, you'll either be replacing both or using small adapters on your current ones. I've used both and see no real difference on street motors, so the adapters are the easiest solution. One final thought: If you can have your Solex carbs rebuilt (not just a kit, but new throttle bushings, etc.) it might be cheaper and you'll have original carbs/air cleaners and the proper distributor vacuum port. I might open a can of worms here, but I've found that, functioning properly, nothing beats the Solex carbs, as they were designed specifically for the 912/356 with perfectly idle/midrange circuits, etc. Good luck, Bill. |

Mic, Stay with the Solex carbs! I had Webers on my 912 and recently had my Solexs rebuilt and put them on. There was a very noticible improvement in performance. The 40IDF was designed for and used on a little Fiat econobox. Also, the recent Weber carbs that were made in Spain are of questionable quality.

The best bet is a rebuild on toour Solex carbs. Bieker Engineering does it but it costs about $350 a set. It is well worth it though as it is a complete rebuild that includes boring throats and bushing new throttle shafts. Mine looked brand bew when I dit them back. Tom Lewis

Bieker Engineering is in my opinion the only way to go. The price I paid and most others have paid is around $800.00 a set though.
I run Webers on my my 912 and Solexs on my 356, in the beginning the Webers were hard to get jetted correctly but after trial and erroring them I found a good combination that works for me on my engine. When I got the Solexs back from Harry they worked well right out of the box, minor tuning of course. Chas. 356 912

I goofed! Charles, you are right about the price. Mine were some over $700 a set. Our 912 runs much better on the Solexs. They don't have the flat spot at mid range that the Webers have. I also have a 356 that I am in the process of rebuilding the engine and other things. In the meantime, I am driving the 912. It is a 1966 with a big bore kit and I am really enjoying it. Right now, a 912 is the best bargain out there on a sports car.

Gabriele, a guy in Italy can set you up with rebuilt Webers, or Dell'Ortos, which I have and are super smooth. He'll jet to your specs and has reasonable prices. He's great to deal with, down side is it takes a couple of weeks to get stuff, but well worth it.
