Is this one worth buying...

I posted a similar thread on the 911 side but dunno if all you 912 guys ever go over there.

My shooting partner has a '68 912 (Blood Orange !) that he has had stored in his garage for 25 years under a car cover. The bad new is that he never drained the oil or gas. Also, at some time in it's life someone applied under coating. Obviously the fuel system will need to be cleaned of all that old varnish and the oil drained and flushed a few times. I suspect the brake lines will need to be replace and calpers rebuilt. I have not seen the interior but he says it's fine and he's a damn good friend whom I trust. It's the undercoating that puts me off and the possibilty/probabiity of rust under that crud. I wouldn't know how to get that checked out to be sure.

I love 912's and had one in the early 70's but now drive an SC. I'm no mechanic but would love to return this car to daily driver condition...not a concours resto. I have not yet seen this car but will arrange to do so in the Fall...we're in no hurry to move on this.

Sorry if this post is redundant to any who lurk the 911 side. Advice most welcome.

Not that I'm an expert, but from my own experience, it depends on how much money you want to put into the effort. All the areas you mentioned will need to be addressed. You will likely need to have work done on all the major systems, plus all the unknowns that come with buying any car that's nearly forty years old.

I'd definately recommend having your mechanic/body shop go over the car to assess the condition first (http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_prepurchase/911_prepurchase.htm) and give you an estimate on what the costs would run to get this car back on her feet. Good luck!
