Check out my cans!

Mann & Hummel cans that is!

I'm just about done accumulating the goodies that will put my mid-1965 production 912 back into factory trim after a rather ugly 060 distributor and Weber carb "upgrade." I just got done rebuilding those Solex 40 PII-4 carbs and needed to find some air filters.

These unusual filters should provide a fine conversation starter at the shows! I've read that they were so ugly that the factory went back to using the mesh Knecht filters until the cans with the filters mounted on the top were available.

I'm also returning to the Bosch 022 distributor, pre-formed steel fuel lines and pre-heater plumbing.

I couldn't resist the urge to degrease the engine and temporarily mount all the new hardware today:

I just love how those Mann & Hummel air filter canisters make the 912 engine look like an old 36HP vintage Volkswagen engine on steroids. You can still really see the shared "genes" and "family heritage" in the early 912s. If you look closely you'll see the doghouse shroud on a 356/912 engine is actually a Volkswagen 36 HP shroud that has been modified with the VW throttle cable holes plugged and the bottom edge trimmed back. There's a factoid for the Porsche "snobs" out there to consider carefully.

Darryl:
Thumbs up on the air cleaners. Years ago I had a 66 with those big cans. I always liked the idea of drawing cool air from an area directly under the grille. Looks aside (I personally love 'em) that evidently was the first choice of the engineers who must have tuned them specifically to the engine. Please post pics when everything's done.
Good luck,
Bill.
